Reaching elevations of over 9000 feet, these 287,000 plus acres known as the Salmon Trinty Alps have been set aside as a primitive area, free of motorized vehicles and accessible only by horseback or hiking. The U.S. Forest Service maintains a well established system of trails. Bounded by the Trinity and Salmon Rivers, the area known for its jagged granite mountains and numerous alpine lakes and streams from which the angler can pull trout. Accessible by several paved and dirt roads that branch off Highway 299 to the north, the Trinity Alps Primitive Area require a free wilderness permit for each group that enters. A list of packing services is available from any of the U.S. Forest Service Stations.
Wildlife, including bear, is plentiful, the scenery spectacular, however a trip of this kind is for the experienced, well prepared and top conditioned hiker or horseman.
